Economic policy in view of a prolonged
COVID-19 pandemic:
A comparative view of Japanese and
German/EU strategies

Thursday, 10 February 2022

18:00 – 19 :30 JST / 10:00 – 11:30 CET

Background

Through the KAS German-Japanese Economic Policy Exchange series, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung aims to further support the exchange between Germany and Japan. These two highly industrialized countries share many similarities. Both countries are leaders in multilateralism and global trade with highly innovative economies and rely heavily on exports. While both economies share many positive aspects, they face similar structural challenges.

The aim of this online series is to provide an open platform of exchange on economic policy. The most important Japanese and German/EU actors in economic policy from parliaments and governments, companies, as well as industrial and economic associations, will be invited to openly discuss the challenges and perspectives of their respective economies, achieve a better understanding of each other and enrich the quality of policymaking.

In a time of continuous disturbances to the global economy because of the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the goal of this online workshop is to give the floor to journalists, business owners, executives and employees, researchers, think tanks, as well as the general public, in order to achieve a multi-dimensional understanding of the challenges the Japanese and German/EU economies face.

Participation in this online event is open, through prior registration, and participants will be able to submit their questions prior to the event.

Focal Issues

  • The international business and trade environment in the context of a prolonged COVID-19 pandemic: Lessons learned during the previous COVID-19 waves.
How do markets behave when facing ongoing virus variants? How will markets endure and what limiting effect does the lasting pandemic situation have on trade and markets? What are successful responses of governments? What is the role of digitalisation?
  • Why is the public-private partnership important when it comes to providing an effective response to the global challenges accelerated by the pandemic?
  • Does the EU-Japan Strategic Partnership Agreement provide solutions to a prolonged COVID-19 pandemic? How can EU-Japan relations adapt better to the current situation?
